Renton Howard Wood Levin * is a UK architectural practice with offices in London and Berlin, and staff members in Qatar.

Architectural firms need to transmit large CAD files internally and externally all the time. But RHWL's old network was struggling to cope so the company wanted a complete network upgrade for its new premises at St Katherine Docks. A new telephone system was also required in order to provide VoIP capability for overseas staff and for those who travel regularly.

To provide the functionality which RHWL required a Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5520 was installed at each site in St Katherine Docks, plus a Nortel Communication Server 1000 at the main site for IP Telephony. Nortel IP Phone 1120 and Nortel IP Phone 1140 Gigabit handsets, plus two PC operator consoles, were also included. Finally, a Nortel WLAN Access Point 2330 was also installed, to provide secure wireless access for staff and visitors.

• Highly reliable and cost-effective voice communications for staff who travel overseas regularly, using IP soft-phones
• The ability to set up temporary remote offices easily by plugging IP handsets into a broadband connection on-site
